SO. IT'S INDEPENDENCE DAY. The one day of the year when I stop angsting endlessly about what my country is and instead celebrate what my country should be. Wants to be. Can be. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Equality and justice for all. Belting of glorified old drinking songs.
And what better way to celebrate your libtery than by blowing things up (or at least watch other people blow things up) and writing semi-illegal pornography?
TWO FICS. Both comics canon, both Steve/Tony. Because Captain America deserves to get both resurrected and laid for his birthday. Boojah!
Title: Everybody Got Naked and We Got Cap Back Day
Author: Letterblade (
wired_lizard)
Rating: PG-13. (Almost gen, one kiss.)
Summary: Tony Stark and Reed Richards go Skrull-hunting, and find a lot more than they bargained for.
Length: c. 5k.
Notes: Gratuitous Civil-War-fix-it-AU, discarding all canon and retcons from the point of departure, including most of Sekrit!Invasion. Kind of crack, except when it's not.

He stands by the table and thinks of all those years ago. It almost makes him shake, it's almost physically painful. Except this time his helmet's off, and Steve's naked, and Jan isn't buzzing up over him, Thor isn't looming at the foot of it, and he's pretty sure they'll be fighting in about five minutes.
Title: Off Grid
Author: Letterblade (
wired_lizard)
Rating: NC-17. (Warning for a tiny infusion of kink.)
Summary: Steve and Tony go camping, and bears are the greatest threat facing America. No, really, that's about it.
Length: c. 7k.
Notes: New Avengers, pre-Extremis, existing relationship. Also, this was supposed to be a PWP. I'm so sorry. Song research done at Cantaria.

It's been one of the most frustrating damn things this whole time. Steve, gentle and caring and vanilla as a fucking angel cake.

Date: Jul. 5th, 2008 01:22 am (UTC)Here is the question I consequently have: what the fuck do I need to read in order to get in on this canon?
no subject
Date: Jul. 5th, 2008 03:28 am (UTC)Okay, so I am only sortof going to be able to answer that question, because I am still trying to figure that out myself. That being said--well, okay, first off, some fan resources. Scans of slashtastic moments, as gathered up by the Steve/Tony comm. (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_ironman/21623.html) And an awesome ship manifesto (http://elspethdixon.livejournal.com/154105.html) by
Most of the rest of my reading has been wandering into bookstores and devouring books. Here are some things I've enjoyed and/or found useful for writing:
Comicscanon!Tony:
- Demon in a Bottle, one of the claaaaaassic arcs. Somebody's controlling his armor and using it to kill people, and it's the first time his alcoholism smacks him in the face. The titular issue is kind of infamous. (Favreau hs said he wants to do this shit in the movies, so I kind of suspect Iron Man II is going to be Tony confronting the old ethanol.)
- Armor Wars, a character portrait of Tony Being An Ass Out Of Guilt. Also his first big
break-upfight with Steve. (Their stories have intertwined through a *lot* of canon; they even share annuals sometimes.)- Extremis, the recent semi-reboot in which Tony gets a rather radical upgrade from what he's been through most of comics continuity, and in the movie, which is to say a smart guy with a nifty suit and no superpowers. As of this arc, he's cybernetically bonded to the armor, carries some of it under his skin, and can wireless connect to any electronic system in the world. Also, the entire six issues is illustrated by Adi Granov, and it's STUUUUUPID PRETTY, worth it just for the eye candy, and you get to meet his rockin' hippy mentor.
- Execute Program follows immediately on Extremis, and leads immediately into Civil War. People are using him to kill people again. Also he stops his heart to save Steve's life. He does that sort of thing a lot.
Captain America:
- Winter Soldier is a fairly recent arc, not long before Civil War, and involves resurrection of a character who'd actually stayed dead for decades, pretty much just to mess with Steve. This is Brubaker, who writs Extra-Dark-And-Broody!Steve, so one must remember that he can sometimes have a sense of humor, but it's still awesome, and the art is motherfucking gorgeous.
- So, well, here's where I admit that most of what I know about Steve, I've learned from reading back on scans_daily (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/tag/captain+america). (Now, of course, the Captain America tag will also cover alternate versions--watch out for the Ultimate-verse Cap, he's a flaming asshole--and his former sidekick who's now using his name, but there's a looot of good stuff there. Some of the best you can also find in some of the linkdumps I've posted here in the past few weeks.)
The Two Together:
- Grab pretty much any volume of Avengers, and there will be at least some Steve and Tony. They're considered two of the Big Three Avengers (along with Thor), and have been in most versions of the team since it started. Plus if you're early on, you get Sixties Crack. Sixties Avengers are AWESOME and cracktastic, and it's nice to get a dose of the relatively bouncy, gabby, cocky way Steve was being written back then. (Brubaker writes all brood and no bounce.)
- New Avengers is the reboot of the team, and the first four volumes are just generally fun reading, because Brian Michael Bendis writes them like they're freakin' married.

Date: Jul. 5th, 2008 03:29 am (UTC)The Whole Civil War Mess:
So that was one of those enormous crossover events that involved, like, every single fuckin' title in the Marvelverse, and I have come nowhere near to following all of it, but I recommend the following four volumes to get a lot of the main stuff:
- Civil War, no subtitle, just Civil War. The miniseries at the core of it. Covers a fair amount of the politics on both sides, and the really big dozens-of-supers-on-each-side-and-Steve-and-Tony-beating-the-shit-out-of-each-other fights.
- Civil War: Iron Man, which is two issues of actual Iron Man, mostly covering Tony being broken into little pieces (which is a lot of what this story does), and two one-shots. "Casualties of War" has been described as a slash fic with the sex scene replaced with a fistfight (and a fistfight which gets about 60 times more poignant if you've read the Demon in a Bottle arc.) "The Confession" is, well, no, I can't even fucking describe it. There's a summary in the ship manifesto above. I have a .cbr file I can email you. If you read nothing else of Civil War ever, read that.
Civil War: Front Lines 1 and Civil War: Front Lines 2: Here less for the Steve/Tony and more for the general view of what the shit is going down in the universe at this point, and because they're awesome. Mostly focused around two reporters, doing what reporters do, and doing it very well. And a whole batch of other stuff. Can be a bit hard to follow, because of the 293842974 plot threads, but, IMHO, worth it. Said reporters get very nasty with Steve. And Tony--well, this arc shows just how far he's willing to go.
*pants* That is what I know off the top of my head. There is tons more, but I cannot guide for what I have not read.
I seriously need to hit up the comm for a Steve/Tony comics-canon reading list.

Date: Jul. 5th, 2008 03:54 am (UTC)even though I just a smackdown from a comic fan about using a fanon movie!verse middle name for Tony.Oh my God. I'm reading that ship manifesto right now. It's brekaing my heart into itty, itty little pieces. Holy shit. I just read the Confessions summary, and oh my God. I don't think it could have hit djkajflkdfdf.
In short, yes, I would love that CBR. Oh my God. And I had no idea that Bendis wrote so much of the canon for it -- I have this, like, molecular level crush on his work for Powers.

CBR has been emailed. And I am obscenely gleeful about seducing you into
the dark sidethe continuity hairball sidethe comicsverse. And, dude, if they cast Cap even HALF as well as they did Tony, I am SO looking forward to their movie interaction. I mean, dude, RDJ has chemistry with everything that move and some things that don't and ASLFKJSKLDFJ IT WILL BE AWESOME.

Date: Jul. 5th, 2008 06:13 am (UTC)Zombie war. Makes a crack about a zombie war. Even then. asdlkfjlkdjf Tony.
OH GOD ARLINGTON CEMETERY. Later at the public funeral, Tony's supposed to give the eulogy, and he just stands there in the rain and stands there and blurts "It wasn't supposed to be this way." And leaves. NNNNNNNNKKKKKKKKK.
Nargle.
There was a Matt McConawatshit rumor that has been shot down. People talk about this a lot. (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_ironman/71416.html) Me, I have no fucking clue, but I don't know that many actors.
