Shoutout to anyone who knows much chemistry: is there a reaction that could be performed quickly, at room temperature, with a few basic materials, that would produce a lot of impressive-looking but harmless smoke?

[Edit: chem problem solved, at least for the moment, because I belatedly remembered that I live with two MIT grads. -.-]

And, yes, it's for the fic. Which, btw, has broken the word requirement! *dances*

State of the Fic:
Words: 11,906 out of >10,000.
Sections finished: 20.
Sections in progress: 2.
Sections unstarted: 2.
Complete first draft wanted by: a little less than four hours from now, including lunch break. Or I can write those last two scenes on the train to the girlfriend and send the whole thing from her house later in the afternoon. One of the two. But [livejournal.com profile] mattador you will get this thing by tonight I hope to god. x.x

[livejournal.com profile] devils_devotion, I pulled a fucking all-nighter for this, I hope you're PROUD. :PPPPPPPP

awoiejf dfjk sdnfkjabwoef bksdjf omgwtfbbq WHY did I do this again?!

I have the painful suspicion this is either going to be one of the more brilliant things I've ever coughed up or a complete and total failure. Totally not sure which. Wibbbbbbbbble! ;_; *mad artistic running around in circles like transmuted chicken*

..........I'll exist again soon, I promise. Just a few more days of this and my LJ will be legible again. ;_;

My old hippie of a chemistry teacher pulled one off that created a lot of bluish colored smoke...I can't remember what he used though, so this reply was essentially pointless. XD

Dry ice + water = lots of 'smoke'

But it would need to be kept cold...

Dry ice is my backup. Either that or writing it without mentioning the chemicals at all, which is clumsier than it looks.

Ah, well...what about sodium + water? That creates quite a lot of smoke.

Well, er, yeah, that too. ::snerk:: But hey, unlike dry ice, you can keep it at room temperature! ::veg::

Mmmm. I know dropping a penny in-- oh, I think it was. nitric-- acid produces a lot of brown-rust toxic smoke. Might want to check the reaction, though. (Simple enough pennies are copper and zinc sandwiches and the equation for nitric acid is probably look-uppable easy enough.)

I know for a face that pool chlorinator/powdered bleach plus sugar and water heated up produces chlorine gas, although not a lot of it.

*ded*

*pats* What you posted a while ago looked brilliant, but you didn't hear me say that. I'm sure it'll be fine and kick my ass in the gen category while it's at it XD
