LARP, DMVs, and other four-letter words
Mar. 17th, 2002 10:54 pmbad tory! no updates!
a lot of things have happened since the last time i bothered to do this. my parents visited and i inflicted them upon my friends. my roommate and i started Operation Walls of Doom (plastering our walls with our favorite Escaflowne stills). another online friend of mine, this time Marcel, is getting corrupted into Escaflowneness. it's spreading!
we had the first meeting of the LARP i'm in. besides my gender-bending exiled dark fae, there's a sullen werewolf mercenary (Lyc'thrra, i think), a kender (small bouncy creature with an odd ability to accumulate shiny objects which belong to other people; Cheryl's kindof adopted her; her name's Jestina), and a rather feral half-elf who has no manners and no control of her fire-magic (Ari). our nemesis is a dark elf mage who's allied with the unseelie (Resar, pronounced something more like Razar); he wears black leather pants and swishes about, and seems to have a rather sickening amount of control over a hapless teenaged boy (Naran).
i had a resurgence of interest in the DMVs (the dark Myst vignettes, for those of you who don't know me from Mystcommunity's writing forums, which are a series of short stories i've been writing concerning the two villainous brothers in the Myst computer game, and which have been getting raves); i started a new one and added some more to one i'm still working on. i thus figure this would an appropriate time to rant about The DMV Song, which is Vedergallningen (Vengeance), by a Swedish band called Garmara. it is the DMV song because i concieved and wrote most of the DMVs to it (when i wasn't writing to Mozart's requiem), and it's so deeply and powerfully associated in my mind that my recent resurgence of interest in these pieces was caused by my roommate obssessively playing the album it's on because i introduced her to it and she fell in love with it. (Garmarna in general is really, really good by the way. so are a lot of the other artists on the NorthSide label. buy their stuff. yay.) the song can be found here. for your convenience, here are the lyrics.
Before the cock crew I was born
Far are the paths that I follow
My mother was dead before the dawn
Long, long she awaited her sorrow
My father travelled the country round,
An ill stepmother to me he found.
Into a needle she conjured me
And said that longing would torture me
And then she turned me into a knife
And said I would suffer all my life.
She turned me into a pair of shears
And said I'd be stunted all my years.
A grey wolf then she made of me,
And said no good would come of me.
Under this curse I was to suffer
Till I drank the blood of my own brother.
So then I lay in hiding
Till my stepmother came riding.
By the bridgehead I lay watching
Till I saw her horse approaching.
And as she passed I caught her
And down from her horse I brought her.
In vengeance cruel and bloody
I took the child from her body.
And when I had drunk my brother's blood,
I became a knight, gallant and good.
i love modern scandinavian music, even though i don't really know much about it. have i raved about Hedningarna yet? no? well, let me just say....RAVE! Hedningarna is one of my favorite bands ever, up there with The Sisters of Mercy. i don't really feel up to extensively plugging their music right now, but i will at some point.
really good stuff, really deep personal associations. and i'm introducing my roommate to that too. bwahahaha.
i listened to beethoven's last piano sonata recently. i don't know where it came from and i don't understand it, but it's really something. i think i'm going drop hints on mum that beethoven sonatas would make really nice presents. i want recordings.
realMYST is coming out soon for the mac. this makes me VERY happy.
Cassie brought a Hello Kitty plushie with a duck suit to dinner today and said that she now had ammunition to compete with my stuffed Cthulhu. several people ducked under the table. i told her maybe i'd get a Santa Chthulhu. i have a new printer cartrige. life is good.
oh, the curious mood listing is because earlier today i was roaming around the Escaflowne Compendium collecting utterly random facts. did you know that the funny plushie Hitomi has in her dream sequence back on Earth with Allen in episode 8 is based on an super-deformed chibi-bug Hitomi drawn by the same Sunrise animator who keyframed the duel between Van and Allen in episode 26? thought so.
and i think that's it for now. i have the pigtails of doom. whee.
