I found this article interesting. However, its central arguments revolve around the notion that EVERYBODY who writes fanfic or participates in an online community has no sense of pride or self-confidence apart from what is bestowed on him/her by the community. I refuse to believe that there are NO people who write for the sheer joy of it, and who don't put excessive importance on the audience.

Yeah, okay, without readers writers would be up a creek. But you have to create your art for your own sake, not to please others. Surely there are many fanfic creators who do so just for the sheer joy of their art, with the accolades/praise as a bonus?
