Second and last part of this one.

"I swear..." Allen rolls his eyes. Waits a few minutes for people to settle down, and then heads over to Basil. "How're you doing? Still not convinced about delaying KOS-MOS' real-world activation?"

"Oh, no, I didn't mean to be out of line. Its just..."

"I know how you feel," says Allen quietly. "But you saw what just happened. Even the Chief is capable of caution. About some things. There are still instabilities in KOS-MOS' system, and--wait, you just transferred here a month ago, right?"

"Yes, sir."

"Oh, you couldn't have known..."

"Are you talking about the accident two years ago?" Basil asks cautiously. "I heard about that, but I don't know any details."

"Oh, right." Allen swallowed awkwardly. "You probably don't know that Shion was engaged to the project lead, Kevin Winnicot, before he died. So she can be a little..." He trails off as his gaze falls on KOS-MOS' maintenance pod, and the two data disks that had slid off it when Shion left them. "Oh, no, not again."

He leaves Basil chewing that over, looking like he'd just swallowed his foot, and gathers them up. Togashi twirls his wrench in one hand and grins. "Perfect! Now the two of you can be alone, as you heroically return her lost data. Besides, you know how Shion gets about data. You should ask her out while you're at it! We can handle the rest of this by ourselves."

"This is your big channnnnce!" Miyuki adds from the corner, with a dirty-old-man leer that looks bizarrely out of place on a cute young woman. Allen does facepalm then, flushing red.

"I told you guys, it's not like that! For crying out loud..."

There are things about Allen's co-workers that will never cease to surprise him. Like the fact that Miyuki can whistle an ear-splitting cat-call when she so desires.

"Anyway," he says, clearing his throat and drawing himself up with his best attempt at dignity, "I need to go deliver this to the Chief." He makes his bid for freedom, with calls of Good luck! and Go, Tiger! echoing behind him.

"Geez," he murmurs to the blessedly empty corridor outside. "They just don't know when to quit." He turns the two disks over in his hands for a moment. "It's not that I don't want to," he confesses, to nobody at all. "I...just can't."
