Don't feel like doing a full update. But I have a few random things I need to get out there.

----------

Wishing to find factoids for bunnies I'm breeding.

For the Middle English types: Anglo-Saxon names: where to find them? Or suggestions? (I'm looking for a woman's given name of a rather assertive cast, a surname (if such a thing existed) that sounds vaguely like Snape (or I could just use Snape), and a nice-sounding but archaic man's given name.)

For the BDSM types: I've got a scene breeding wherein somebody recieves a rather thorough spanking, and will be made to count. Approximately what might the number be when the smoke clears?

----------

Something I just had to get out there:

I like the Draco Trilogy. I don't love it to death, I don't fangirl Cassie infinitely, and I have issues with some of the liberties she takes with canon (I don't care how much fun wibbling she gets out of it, the position of Slytherin's Heir is taken!), but I find the stories entertaining.

I don't like what the Trilogy has done to the fandom. Infinite examples, naturally. One in myself, as I am still half-convinced that Coulter is canon despite the fact that all evidence points otherwise, and he's probably from the Trilogy. Highly embarassing. Will have to email Cassie asking if I can borrow her character for kinky sex magic with Tom Riddle.

And that is what I had to say about that.

----------

Went to a Really Cool Show last night. Seven Acts of Violence, presented at Mobius. One sixth dance, two sixths theater, the rest combat and violence. Quite scary at times. And presented by my co-worker. Slightly odd to see somebody who you're used to pushing papers with tearing across the stage with a gun and blood all over her head, or talking about how she put her head through a wall due to hypglycemia except she didn't. Yay experimental art. (It's playing tomorrow too, a matinee, if anybody in the area who wants can tear off on a moment's notice. Just so you know.)

*kicks internet* Work, damn you!

How much spanking a person can tolerate is dependent on lots of things: how hard the blows are, was anything other than a hand used, the person's pain tolerance, the person's state of arousal (the more aroused you are, the less things hurt-- this is why even people who are fairly vanilla don't feel pain when they get hickies sometimes), any intoxicants...

The number could be anywhere from 5 to 50.

Coulter's from the Trilogy? I'm sorry for you but relieved for myself-- I had another pre-Figg, pre-Juliana, pre-Snape head of Slytherin and I was afeared I'd provided myself with yet another reason why HoIF is technically AU despite the fact that my characterizations are fairly canonical.

For names, maybe the Onomastikon (http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/) will give you a starting point at least.

You could also try picking up any book on Anglo-saxon England at a library. Books like that are always guarenteed to have authentic names in them.

Anglo-Saxon is much earlier than Middle English. Which do you want?

Sigh. The first time I read that, my eyes played horrible tricks on me and made me want to read "better" instead of "earlier." And just when I thought I'd found someone who took my view of things...

I'm not sure what you were looking for here, so I'll give stuff for OE and ME:

There are a couple of sites for Anglo-Saxon personal names -- unfortunately, I don't remember the links off-hand and the place I can go to *get* them is currently down >.< If you have access to a university library with some strength in English literature or history, George Searle's Onomasticon Anglo-saxonicum is probably the place to start. It's not particularly reliable from a scholarly point of view, but it'll be helpful for fanfic. You can also go to some modern translations Bede's The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which has a ton of names in it, or otherwise flip through some of the longer Old English poetic works, such as Beowulf and The Battle of Maldon, which are a good source as well.

For Middle English, name sources might depend on the period (I'm not as familiar with post-Conquest stuff.) A name concordance to the Domesday Book might be useful. Also, the following is a link to an electronic adaptation of the Dictionary of English Surnames. It only covers women, however, but it's interesting to see various attestations of names and how the spelling of each name changes over the years.

http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/reaneyintro.html

A lot of Middle English names were simply imported from France after the conquest -- thus, the rise of Jehan/Jean/Johan/John, William/Guillaume/Guileme, et cetera. If you want something more specific than my generalizations, though, the Middle English Dictionary by Hans Kuether (last name probably misspelled) might be of help.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head =) Hope this helps some!
