The Housing Post

...know anybody Boston-area who's got a room to rent?

So I can stay in my current housing situation for only about another month. Housemates sign new lease on September 1st, and the Random Unwanted Houseguest (me) should be gone by then.

I had originally planned, when I was first homeless and hunting, to get my own place. However, the more I've considered things (and had a wacky Tarot reading), the more I've realized that living by myself would be Very Not Good right now. I'm a borderline introvert-extrovert; the presence of people can occasionally overwhelm me, but I go absolutely nuts without them.

I do, however, reserve the right to be moderately picky about who I move in with. I will be frank: a lot of people who've lived with me have wound up hating me. And a housing situation that blows up in my face will, if anything, be worse for me than living alone. There are a fair number of people in the world who I like just fine as friends but would not be okay living with. And if I have to move again within a year or two, I'm probably going to freak the fuck out.

Disclaimers offered, however, if you do have a room to rent or an open slot in your geek house, please look under the cut, and if you don't but know somebody who does, please pass this on.

This will also be cross-posted to Craigslist, but I know I'll have better luck and be more comfortable if I go through my friendslist.

Do you know Galen aka [livejournal.com profile] marphod? He has a place in Medford and is looking for a housemate. You might reply to here (http://marphod.livejournal.com/352308.html) with a link to this info.

Actually, my email address (in my profile) is better. But I got here anyways.

I'm looking for a roommate, immediate availability (although also no pressure to rent RSN).

650$ plus 2/5th of the utilities (except Water, which I cannot legally charge for). Oil heat, gas range (electric oven, though), electricity, cable/internet and phone. If I end up getting another roommate, the utilities would be dropped to 1/3rd. I am also looking into a cleaning service.

Non-smokers, only (allergic).
Geek preferred. Graduate Student/Young Professional preferred.
Open and affirming house. I'm a multistory unit, so it may not be accessible, but all disabilities welcome.

I have the top 2 floors of a 2-family house; it totals around 2400sq
ft. For shared spaces, there's a large kitchen, a living room, dining room, and a library (all lower floor). 2 full baths (one on each). Storage is available in the basement. There is an in-unit laundry (well, on the stair platform outside the kitchen). (There is also my room (lower), the soon-to-be-former office (upper), which I may try to rent, and my game room/stuffed animal abode (upper), which can be public space/guest room as needed). The downstairs neighbor (he has a separate entrance and occupies the first floor) and I jointly own the house.

The room I'm looking to rent is (all sizes approximate using a 16" ruler; I can't find my tape measure) - a T room, with the long side being 20x7, and the leg being 8x4 (long wall is interior). 2 windows (in the leg of the T). Carpeted.

(The soon to be former office is ~14x9, but I need to get stuff out of there, and it has only one small window.)

For fair warning, I am looking to do some remodeling over the next few years, but I can schedule that to convenient times (and lower the rent on those months due to the inconvenience).

(on the list of potential things includes adding a 3/4 bath, adding a whirlpool tub, turning the other part of the upstairs into a master suite, adding more windows and a skylight. Nicer carpet in the rentable bedroom/upstairshall, better venting in the roof)

My place is a few blocks from Medford Center, just off the 96 and 101 bus routes, and close to the 80, 94, 95, and the West Medford commuter rail stop.

As for your desired amenities:
-Geek house, or at least v. open-minded (for I am bipolykinkypagangeek)

I'm a geek; its my house. (I meet the bipolykinkypagangeek moniker, but I'm mostly non-practicing on both the Poly and Pagan part.)

- A place to put my car (required)

Plenty of on street parking (no permit) and the driveway is technically 3 cars (and we've fit 4, before), although that depends on moving cars and sometimes playing car tetris with the downstairs neighbor. I generally park on the street, though.

- Air conditioning (or at least a window to install one in my room)

Window, check. I have an AC unit, as well, but until we get the roof fixed, you may want th put one in the upstairs bathroom as well -- the upper floor can get hot without AC in each room.

- In-building laundry

Check

- Dishwasher

Check.

- Mobile shower head (not for the reason you think)

Don't have one, but if you move in, I don't care if you want to replace it.

- Naturalist/clothing-optional

Not strictly.

- Wireless

I've got a wireless access point that's not currently working. OTOH, the downstairs neighbor doesn't care if we still his.

- Cat(s)

No can do. Allergies.

Medford. Just pronounced like us locals say it. Except a few too many letters (Mefe(d) is how I usually spell it.)

My bf uses Meffa. There's a restaurant on Salem Street that has a dish with the name Meffa.
