I thought Bittorrent was supposed to be fast. I've gotten better transfer speeds off of servers in people's basements.

In case you haven't guessed, today has sucked. I'll try to gather the guts to go into it later.

I once spent nine days downloading a bittorented movie. A really horrible movie.

If you're downloading something relatively popular, while it is being relatively popular, it's fast. If you're downloading something more obscure that is only being seeded by a server in someone's basement, not so swift.

It's only fast if lots (read: hundreds) of other people are sharing that torrent. In general, the vast majority of sharers are on dialup (or sharing an absurd amount of stuff), so you get like 2K-3K/sec from each person. If you've got 100 peers, you can get upwards of 100K/sec, but if there are 2-3, you'll be lucky to get 7-10K/sec.

By contrast, a guy in a basement usually invests pretty heavily in his connection and limits it to 2-3 users. So you get guaranteed 40-50K/sec (assuming SDSL or cable), which will beat most torrents for speed.

I once spent close to a month downloading a season of My Little Pony episodes.
