The note (forgot this last post): my trial shareware IRC proggie has expired, and my system software is still too out-of-date (considering updating to 10.4 after some research) to let me download anything else, so I may be off the channel for a few days. Woe.
The assload of BPAL: Blood Lotus caught my eye right in the vial because of the color--it looks almost like dried blood, which is sortof eerie. First whiff of the open vial? Cherry cough syrup. o.O I bet it'll change though...let's see how it goes later. First non-cough-syrup smell is exactly like the little Indian import store Anna takes me to in Maine--that must be the lotus. Very nice, rich and exotic and floral with a slight edge. And then a little edgier and bloodier, dark and heady, edible and sexy and vaguely hypnotic--can hardly stop sniffing my wrist now. As it fully dries, though, it thins and flattens a little. Lingering, it's kinda like the memory of the little Indian import store, dry and wafty, mostly unremarkable. But maybe if I put on more the hypnotic stage might last longer...
Mantis, in the imp and fresh on my skin, is pure vegetable matter. It's like walking through a riot of green things--not flowers, no herbs, just sheer wild biomass. It's a little sharp at first, but soon on my skin it becomes damp and breezy. Now it's a grassy field in the rain, airy and heady and full of life. So very very nice! And it seems to stay that way for a while. Definitely keeping this imp, maybe buying more, because I think I might want to smell like a meadow on a regular basis, wot.
Hamadryad provides me with an interesting situation, because I somehow--crossed orders? misplaced mental lists?--got two imps of it. They even arrived the same day in different packages. One's darker in color than the other, even. So I'm testing them both at once, one on each wrist. And they're both quite nice, though rather different. Hamadryad the Darker, on the left wrist, is darker in scent, too, spicier, pinier, woodier. Vaguely Christmasy, but not overwhelmingly so. Hamadryad the Lighter, on the right wrist, is paler, less like trees and more like berries, though strangely woody and muted. Are batch differences really this extensive with BPAL? A few minutes later, Hamadryad the Lighter smells much the same and Hamadryad the Darker is getting a distinct tinge of cinnamon or somesuch. And now the Lighter is getting paler and sweeter and more berryish, while the Darker is continuing to be spicy, and they fade pretty much along those lines. Conclusions: wtf, mate?
Shanghai is very light and fresh at first whiff--green tea to the nines, delicate and vaguely exotic, but pleasant and understated. After a few moments on my skin the lemon verbena comes through very strong, making me smell like my mother's kitchen windowsill, but really in the best sort of way. And after a bit more the honeysuckle starts to show, and now it's not quite so clear, a little wild and floral, but still quite nice. I've been wearing it to work the past coupla days because of the tea and the general unscary pleasantness.
Bewitched I just got my second imp of (gave the first to Anna) and this is just a note to say, yup, this one's different. Muskier, smokier, woodier, much less berryish, fades to quite a bit of evergreen. Not unpleasantly so, though, and I may still wear it from time to time, but we'll see.
Snow White (I'm guessing this is the '04?) is, appropriately enough, one of the most transparent BPAL's I've ever seen, and whoever decanted it used a really stubborn vial--took all my strength to open it. My reward? Such an indescribably pale, colorless scent that I applied it with an unbent plastic-coated paperclip, just to be sure the toothpick wasn't coloring it. It's a breath of drifted snow, barely distinguishable--disappointing how weak it is, but haunting nonetheless. Weakness might have to do with age, though, not sure about that. Vague hints of my nemesis ozone though--coming out on my skin like a much gentler and less soapy Szepasszony, but then it darkens to something very vaguely sweet, but still gray, still drifting snow. Not quite sure whether I love it or hate it--tempted to order a bottle of the '05 with my Christmas money and go full force to see, because if it does come out well for me...let's just say the central planet of the Wintering is snowbound, and having S'layshian's scent lying around would be very, very nice.
(*looks outside to see blue sky and rolling clouds and snow whipping in great feathery clouds off the firs* I want my Talvikuu from the decant circle! *SOB*)
Belladonna, speaking of Wintering things, is the only scent I've yet tried solely on basis of name associations. And my first impression? To quote Data: It is green. Literally, the oil's a pale grassy green. Rather disconcerting when everything else is in the transparent-to-golden range. Moving beyond that: in the vial, it's pure piney herbs. Mint comes out the strongest. On my skin it gets more piney and less minty, and then starts to pull together into something deeper and warmer and mouth-watering. (I've noticed I think of scents primarily in colors--that's my peculiar synaesthesia--so I feel like there's reddish-brown gathering under the mess of greens, for example.) After a little longer, it's almost candyish, but still edgy and green. Does it make me think of Belladonna, my Belladonna? No. It does bring Rowan to mind a bit, but mostly I'm just enjoying it on its own terms. And, yes, a hint of floral as it fades, but in just all the best of ways.
Sea of Glass I bought at the same time as Snow White, on a pale-and-pure kick, I suppose. And pale and pure it is, in the imp--something indescribably glowing. But what comes out first moment on my skin? Ozone. Yikes. Like Tempest without the redeeming features. Let's give it a moment. Nope, still making my nose hairs tingle. Though there's something strangely compelling there that wasn't with Tempest--I don't straight up dislike it. But that thin dead-cricket ozone stink just isn't going away. I think it may be a loss.
Coyote--besides living in a decant imp which is terminally unable to stand up until I put two mini hair clips around its base--is sharp and wild and grassy in the vial and instantly mutates into animal on my skin. Musky leather for a bit--and then it fades suddenly, and all I'm left with is dry grass. Very nice dry grass--I'm in some high and endless field--but kinda disappointing. But then, bam, the grass is gone and there's the leather again. I guess this is what happens when you name a scent after a trickster god. At any rate, in all of its incarnations it's been quite nice in its own way--sun-drenched and warm and untamed, and quite possibly not me, but interesting nonetheless. Makes me think of a bit of Jasper, long as I'm free-associating with my novel.
Glasgow I somehow expected to start out all berries, but instead it's all heather. Sharp wild gray-green heather. Dusty, too, somehow--makes me want to sneeze. I certainly ain't gettin' no blackberry yet, which is sad. But it's lightening up a bit with time--and, yes, there I think are the berries, but they're still sharp and thinned out with air. Finally as it dries it's mellowing out, but it still really hasn't come together. Maybe another test will give me something better, but at the moment it ain't working.

Mermaid- wise, carefree, and beautiful. You live
without much care in the world and people
sometimes find you arogant. But it never really
bugs you because you know lifes to bright to
care about little things like that. You aren't
optimistic, but rather prefer to live in the
moments and relax, never worrying about the
future or the past. Your life may be a little
boring and adventure-less, but its peaceful and
full of friends. You are probably pretty
popular in school, for your casual attitude and
looks.

Date: Dec. 9th, 2005 10:19 pm (UTC)Pixi-Careless, happy, energetic, prankster. The
heart of any forest you live to pull pranks on
unsuspecting people. It seems all fun and games
until someone pulls one back on you. You are
very humerous and let nothing get you down.
Probably the optimist in any group you always
try to make everyone get a smile on their face.
Wether its pants'ing a unsuspecting person or
throwing a pie in your face you'll do anything
for a few laughs and fun. You were probably the
class clown in school and everyone loved you
for it. Sometimes though its hard for people to
take you serious but that doesn't happen too
often anyway.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2005 05:28 pm (UTC)There are numerous torrents for Mac OS X 10.4 findable through isohunt.com, if you'd like to pirate it. Didn't see any for 10.3, but why bother?

Date: Dec. 10th, 2005 06:05 pm (UTC)10.4 I can steal from my mother anyway, so that's not a problem. I actually kinda have been looking for 10.3 because of some major instability problems Mum's been having with 10.4, but there've been updates to 10.4, so I'm hoping once I install those I'll be okay.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2005 06:38 pm (UTC)Looking again, I do see a Panther torrent. It contains 3 CDs, which seems like an strange number. Perhaps it's missing the dev tools CD.
You should just grab 10.4 from your mom.
