letterblade: (myst)

Flipping Lizard Studios Presents...the DMVs!

New, improved, now with more metaphors!

Dedicated to Aitrus5,
Fellow connoisseur of abominable acts,
Wherever he may be:
For daring to ask after Achenar's dreams.

In the Fandom of Myst,
With a Rating of R (for violence),
Under the Name of M'lah Sihfay,
Returning from the Grave of Long-Delayed Revision,
Canonically Undermined by Myst IV: Revelation,
Come seven stories in one, or one story in seven, of the two dastardly brothers, Sirrus and Achenar, and the Ages they visited, and what happened there, and who they might really be.
I - II - III - IV - V - VI - VII
They're, like, critically acclaimed and everything!

Important to remember so you don't get confused or think I'm stupid: These stories were planned and written literally years before the release of Myst IV: Revelation, the piece of the canon that deals most extensively with Sirrus and Achenar, so they do not incorporate any information from that game. Due to relative time frames, no information in Revelation directly contradicts anything in these stories; however, in light of certain matters revealed, there are major gaps in what they address.

Seriously and more extensively, the Full Details follow below.

------------------------------------

First drafts finished for: Mysterium 2002, Philadelphia.

Final drafts finished for: Mysterium 2004, Toronto.

Invaluable editing and advice from: Dester'edra, a most excellent dragon.

Musical and lyrical salutation to: Garmarna and the grand old Swedes.

Nervous tip of the (top)hat to: Team Revelation UbiSoft, especially Mary DeMarle, for the threat of new canon which gave me the kick in the rear I needed to finish old fanon.

Timeline. )

I - Everdunes - The Prophecy
A Prologue, in which two boys hear a story.

II - Stoneship - Salt In the Wound
In which three boys discover much that should not be.

III - Mechanical - Vengeance
In which Sirrus faces death and Achenar triumphs over the storm.

IV - Myst - In Dreams
An Interlude In Collage, in which falls everything that is not elsewhere.

V - Channelwood - Masks
In which Achenar has difficulties with water.

VI - Aspermere - Blessed Are the Meek
In which Sirrus falls in love.

VII - Whiterock - For the Love of Spring
An Epilogue, in which Sirrus claims victory and an ending approaches.

Final notes, edited: Date: September 22, six days from Revelation's release, preserved as of this editing (November 19) because I can't think of anything better to say.

Within a week this piece will become officially Out Of Date, replaced by new canon, etcetera.

I had planned to do one final editing pass before this date, making one last attempt to tie up any character/thematic stuff. However, given that my senior year in college is in full swing, I won't have the time. I will not be touching these stories again, even if they are not all they can be. They will, of course, remain online, mostly for the sake of those who are already familiar with them (and my own egotistical tendency to keep stuff up); I doubt new readers are going to get much out of them after Revelation, because if that game accomplishes what it is trying, it'll get deep enough into Sirrus and Achenar's characters that what I covered will be recovered canonically. (And if it doesn't manage that, I will lose a little faith in Mary DeMarle.)

There remain as yet unfinished/unedited two pieces in this continuity (discounting the Book of Narayan, which is another problem entirely). One is a brief poem concerning the mythohistory of Mechanical, which I may just leave behind entirely, as I hope it isn't necessary to understand the story--though it's a pretty enough piece on its own, and I might post it in an independent capacity someday. The other is a Catherine piece set briefly after Riven, which needs rather a bit of work, and which I may abandon entirely (much as I love the bits of it that exist). If I do not, I'll probably detatch it from this universe for simplicity's sake.

So that is that. The DMVs are done with.

Read (or don't), enjoy (I hope), and review (if you wish).
