OotP spoilers meme? Sortof.
Apr. 10th, 2003 08:52 amI solemnly swear I am going to read no spoilers for OotP.
Putting my foot down here. I really don't want to know. I want to get the book and crawl into a little hole with a light and read and reread and have that be the way I know what happens. Sometimes I don't mind, and sometimes I don't care, but in the case of a new HP book... Let me put it this way. Would the first read of PoA have been as cool if we knew about Scabbers? The later reads you already know these things. But the first reading of a good, unpredicable book, is a special, special thing, and I don't want to lose that to some cold little summary on Leaky Cauldron.
This is not some whim; this is a solid decision. I want no spoilers; I am one of those people for whom you're all putting them in cut tags; please respect this.
So naturally, I won't be posting any spoilers either. ;-)
*declares this a spoiler-free journal, rolls over, goes back to sleep*
Edit because I couldn't get to sleep:
And obviously it's too much to take such a stand in this fandom without somebody getting pissed at you.
*melodramatic sigh*
I beg your pardon.
This makes no sense to me. Having opinions about it, yes. We're all entitled, we're all fans, we're all prone to bizarre mental spasms over the object of our fanliness--the mental spasms just vary from person to person. Getting infuriated at people who simply want to hear the plots of JKR in the words of JKR...gib gib? Is the one second it'll take you to type a cut tag too much to ask? Is the common decency to respect a fellow fan's choice, born out of a love for the work that is surely equal to yours, too much to ask? And as for assuming that I think spoiler-positive folks are not pure fans--wrong. We all love the books, we're all excited about OotP; we just express it in different ways.
*is now sure that, in Dickens' time, there were people who were forced to live in caves because they didn't want to know whether Little Nell was dead*
I should stop this. I haven't slept enough; I don't think about what I'm saying. This is obviously how flamewars are started.
