"If we devote ourselves to finding holes exactly shaped to house such great words as Freedom, Honour, Bliss, I agree, we shall spend a lifetime slipping and sliding and searching, and all in vain. They are words without a home, wanderers like the planets, and that is an end of it."

Date: May. 28th, 2004 05:03 pm (UTC)Yes, hopefully some intelligent SKU fans will arise. I guess that when I saw it in 2000 it was very obscure, and I really have no idea how popular or whatnot it's become these days. And hopefully some of those people will write some good fanfic or make some good vids. As for vids, I like "Peace and Love, Incorporated" and "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and "Never Meant To Be" and then there's a few others that still get to me even though they use embarrasing songs, like "Torn" and that one to Evanescence.
I actually... I'm weird about fanfic. My current policy is that I don't read it (for anything), even though I slip up and sometimes do. Even in the height of my fanfic-reading days I was still very picky. I read some of those long post-series epics, but never felt like coming back to any of them after a while. I never felt that most people got Utena or Anthy or Akio right, or even handled them in interesting ways, and wouldn't bother reading most fanfic. I stayed away from anything Mikage-based, as I love him too much and sooooooo many people seem to misunderstand him. I did, however, read lots of Touga/Saionji smut. And came to the conclusion that all those stories were just bad. I actually... in a lot of ways, I love discussing it and reading essays about what it might have meant, but fanfic all seems to say "this is so" rather than "this might be so" and I think that on the one hand, the story is complete in itself and needs no explanation, and on the other hand it's so ambiguous and so full of holes that you can't actually pin it down or answer any of the questions.
Like... Mamiya, for instance. When did he die? How long before the fire? Or in the fire? Or when? Can we trust any of the memories or images we are shown? Can we trust anything Akio says?
I've always figured that Mamiya didn't change his mind about eternity, that probably the false Mamiya was the one saying he wanted eternity. Except that would have false-Mamiya before the fire... or was false-Mamiya only created in response to fire-suppression delusion? How whacked was Mikage, really? And when they say he's "dead" what the hell does that mean?
And these questions have no answers. There cannot be ferreted out from the story one single correct view of events, because we just don't have enough information. Ah, why I love it so....
But the reason I stay away from fandom is the stupid things I've heard people say. I don't like getting those dumb ideas spattered all over the beauty and stuck in my head.
Although I do have to ask here, since you claim you've read everything... whether that includes my stories, as I'm never sure how accesible they are, and how many people wander across them. www.nemurokinenkan.net That's not a pimp, actually, as they suck, just a question.
Getting long. Will post rest in another comment.

Date: May. 28th, 2004 05:09 pm (UTC)I actually did apply there, though, but.... That's a really long story. Really long.
Jess with the one long braid and the rest short?
Yup, that's the one. I just saw her recently in Philly, and she has an apartment and a kitty and seems to be doing well. She and Jemma are both some of my Quaker friends.
Jemma...doesn't talk to me anymore. I have a suspicion she never liked me, but these are the things you find out when the people you thought were your friends ditched you after two years.
Well, I know nothing about nothing about that. It sounds sad, though. And a little awkward.
