So clearly I have a bit of a new fandom. (Duh.) Keep tweaking the Jack/Tony fic closer to completion--every time I open the file, they start talking and don't shut up. Not porn, not sheep-dancing, just chatter. Politics. Snark. Because they both love the sounds of their own voices. Gib gib.

Still want to try to get into Obadiah's head.

And, because my brain likes to challenge itself, I keep getting bits of...het. Okay, het isn't too weird for me anymore. But main character het. Main character het that I would be EXTREMELY ANNOYED if they did it full-on in canon, if it was in any way romantic or schmoopy, if it was...anything except unexpressed protective crushing. But my brain is trying to make it work. WHY DO I WANT TO WRITE TONY/PEPPER?!

The fic in question actually wants to be called "Not Doing the Spiderman and MJ Thing."

They're doing that thing in my head where they kindof ramble and talk over each other. (Well, Tony does that all the time.) "--and also you're my boss, and everyone knows that I'd do anything for you, but not like that, and it would be like you're using me even if you aren't, even I would think you were using me--"

"--then don't let me use you, use me first--"

"--what, what's that mean, use you, how do you expect me to do that--"

"--it's how we do things in America, isn't it, use the other guy before he uses you--"

(Also just because a girl is cute and straightforward and relatively normal doesn't mean she's also perfectly vanilla and sexually bland.)

I think this may be the weirdest pairing I've contemplated since Ed/Roze.

IMO, the way they played Tony/Pepper is that he's her boss first, anything else second. Even if they were to fall into bed together, she would still think of him as her boss and not really her lover (she's seen all the people he's dragged to bed). I can't imagine that she'd ever consider him capable of TRUEETERNALLOVEOMG. He fools around; that's his nature in whatever he does.

If it won't leave you alone, you can always do Tony/Jack with Pepper as an occasional spice (pun not fully intended). At least one person would be happy to read that. ;)

Now I have the image of her walking in on them the morning after, all coifed and ready to start her day... only to find it *not* what she's used to.

That's a good way of putting it--and it seems like a lynchpin here might be, given all the crazy-ass shit that's going down, whether she starts to think of him as crazy-superhero-who-I'm-helping-out first instead of simply boss. If that makes any sense. A more complicated and less predetermined social role.

There's no way Pepper expects or wants TRUEETERNALLOVEOMG--possibly not in general, but certainly not from Tony. She's got brains. That doesn't mean she doesn't care a good deal for him in otherwise, and that doesn't mean she doesn't find him attractive (as she's also got eyes).

I guess what it boils down to is that it seems like there's a very narrow, narrow balance where it could actually be interesting and not OOC, and I want to see if I can hit that balance because I'm a literary masochist.

Hrm. That might depend on how he divides his time, and what he requires of her now that he's also a public superhero. If he's still mostly having her run errands and only occasionally asks her to wade into dangerous areas, "superhero" becomes just a facet of his role as her boss. If he's always asking her to do things for Iron Man... Actually, I think she could get annoyed rather fast. Superhero sidekick is not part of her job description, and she'd better be paid accordingly and get more vacation time.

If he ever has to rescue her, I see it playing out with him diffusing the situation by making a joke about it being hard to find another assistant who will put up with his shit.

I actually see it being dangerous for their relationship if he stops sleeping around. Maybe he sleeps around less (he's busier), but I think she'd start feeling awkward as soon as he started showing consideration for her.

Does that make sense?

There's nothing weird about it! They're cute. I'm not sure yet whether I 'ship them or not, but I like that little exchange you posted above. I like that they're actually talking about it, and it's quirky enough that it doesn't have to come off as schmoopy boring "Talking About Our Relationship." Keep the quirks in; they're what makes this pairing fun. If anyone can take the cliches and twist them, it's you.

Speaking of other pairings in the movie, part of me thinks that Stark/Rhodes would be entertaining. I can't actually imagine how it would work, but the actors had wonderful chemistry together.

Oh, totally. Buddyslash is one of those things that I tend to not think about as much, but I think I've sortof mostly assumed that they're sleeping together. And if they aren't now, they probably will be once they start playing around in armor together.
