My Schrödinger's Cat Day Resolution
Jan. 20th, 2007 01:44 pmFrom this time forth, I will, upon every day (where "day" is defined not by midnight or the passage of the sun, but by the time I rise until the time I retire, not including naps), perform at least one of the following literary activities:
~ Write at least 750 words in any piece, new or ongoing, fan or original. (Yes, I took the number from that community.)
~ Perform at least an hour of editing and/or expansion of one of my WIPs, fan or original. (If properly editing, getting a word count can be tricky. And this means working on it, not just rereading the file and wibbling.)
~ Complete a piece, new or WIP, fan or original, of a size greater than a technical drabble. (Yes, I'm aware this allows for wiggle room; I could simply write a last line on an extant piece I wrote most of yesterday, or write a fic shorter than 750 words (not easy for me though!) and still finish the day. But I like systems with wiggle room.)
~ Finish a piece, new or WIP, by which I mean editing it to all satisfaction, and then either coding and posting it, if a fan piece, or queueing it for potential publication, if by some miracle an original piece. (Yes, more wiggle room.)
~ Write an entry in Sire & Pup. (Seeing as I write it in the LJ update window, getting a word count is nontrivial. However, seeing as Pup's a florid and wordy lad, I doubt any such entries will be shorter than 750 words.)
Performing greater than the requirement on one day does not count towards the requirements of the next.
Should I be performing work in another art of similar quantity, substitutions may be made. For example, should I be drawing or creating digital art, or designing for web or print for personal reasons, this would count in place of writing. Fandom essays, intensive plotting, or LARPs would also count. LJ updates, routine dance and music practice, cooking (however inadvisably creative), and so forth, will not.
Should I be busy enough that I have no leisure time, or significantly physically or mentally ill, I will allow myself to claim exception, as this resolution is meant to be an encouragement and not a burden.
Should I prove to be insanely straining myself in adopting this resolution, or simply need a break from perpetual writing, or should a hypothetical job be demanding greater attention, I reserve the right to modify, temporarily suspend, or permanently abandon it with similarly public notice. Please mock me only gently should this occur.
Conclusions:
~ This journal is likely to become more ficspammy. Be warned. I mean, the goal is to increase my output, but most of my output has been obscure or boring as of late.
~ I may be randomly asking for inspiration or challenges, such as "first person to comment gets 750 words of something of their choice, 'cause I can't think of something and my WIPs are frustrating, durrrr." Should this become annoying, please let me know.
~ Pup is a bad influence on my writing style. Alas!
