Fic upload notice: pr0n!
Dec. 8th, 2003 12:53 amYup, you guessed it. The Spike/Vicious is finally up.
Red Bird Roulette--the Russian kind, of course. A six-bullet slice of Spike and Vicious, before the Bebop, before Julia. Slash, violence, bondage, weaponsex--all in the course of a good day’s work. (And SPOILERS for episode 26.)
Spike might have screamed once, but Vicious forestalled it.
It was time for revenge, after all--Spike had been awaiting it, perhaps anticipating it, ever since he'd cuffed Vicious to the bed. But he had not expected it to begin with a noose dropped round his neck...

It feels so strange to be posting this fic now.
I've been writing it for...a month and a half by now. Most of it came quite quickly. And I was excited about it, I was quivering to release it, for so much of that time. But there were holes, small but important holes, which took me far too long to manage to fill. And then betaing. And now...I'm tired of it, and it's almost depressing. But it's complete, and it's edited, and while I'm not happy with it I want to post it as it is, because it is very much a complete thing, there's nothing I can fit in, it's all really one idea. I'm also worried that my style is going in a direction I don't like, that this fic is a big sign of it, but that's a-whole-nother ramble entirely.
I think there's a lot more I know about Spike and Vicious now than when I wrote most of Red Bird. Some of it I'm almost uncertain of now. And there's more I need to say about them, at least one very important thing, and it simply did not fit in here. So I probably will write more about them someday.
The first part I am very unsure of, but I can't quite bring myself to cut it for rhythm reasons, for opening reasons. And my beta did like it, so I'll take that as a good sign. But wibble.
And the last part...the last part I just want to see people's reactions, because that scene has been weighing on me for so long, that bunny making me shudder violently at inappropriate intervals. And making me want to post so very, very badly, but I held off until it was ready, maybe too long. I might say it frightens me; it certainly overwhelms me. Breaking some sort of personal frontier, I suppose.
But I am very proud of having it posted. Been looking forward to this for weeks. In the sake of the mad excitement I had until recently, and might have again, do enjoy.
I believe that is all.

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 01:57 am (UTC)Incredibly powerful and very in character. It's rare to see ViciousxSpike and then when you do it's so often OOC. But it didn't feel like that at all in your fic. And so, unsure of it as you seem, I commend you on it anyway because I quite enjoyed it.

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 07:34 am (UTC)It seems like it would be such a common pairing, and so obviously wrong to fluff that people would get the point. But, alas, such does not seem to be the case. *mumbles at fandom*
And, my goodness, where does the picture in your journal layout come from? Much as I'm convinced that Vicious is the one adult character in that show who *doesn't* smoke, he looks utterly gorgeous lit like that... *shivers*
And who's in the icon?

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 08:43 am (UTC)Anyway. Thought I'd mention that I will be holding off working on the second NaNo-thingie until January 15th- February 15th, 'cause you're right- so, so much more convenient timing.

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 09:04 am (UTC)So on January 15th, I shall begin. *nods excitedly* PriNoWriMo!
And go, watch. End of Bebop sooooooooo good.

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 06:24 pm (UTC)And my default icon is of Oriya from the undeniably slashy show Yami no Matsuei. I guess he'd be my favorite character, though he only shows up for a total of ten minutes. Well, maybe longer...
Now I feel I should read your other fics because I know you've got a Gren one in there and Gren is just... I love Gren.

Date: Dec. 8th, 2003 06:43 pm (UTC)I'd like to read that ramble, when you're ready to write it.
As I said, more or less, in
I hope you will leave the intro. Re: the rhythm, I found this very pleasing:
Stop. Rewind. Further.
("The same blood flows through both of us, Spike. The blood of a ravaging beast.")
Much further. Rewind.
Yaoi is generally a take-it-or-leave-it genre for me. When I dislike it, it's in stories where I perceive a sort of insidious and inappropriate femme-ing of a character, as if the butch/femme pairing were the only possible relationship model (this seems to happen a lot to poor Jet). "Red Bird Roulette" kicks my ass in that the relationship is a contest (quite literally) of equals. I can't imagine a valuable sexual relationship between Spike and Vicious on any other terms. Also, I can't imagine the portrayal of an unequal relationship between them as being much of a turn-on. The power dynamic is delicious ... consensual non-consensual, where even the possibility of death is erotic. If their relationship had been unbalanced in terms of power, I probably would have found the story disturbing. But as it stands, I'm bowled over by it, and your last three lines are perfect.
I'm glad you posted your thoughts here in your own journal, in part because it's given me an opportunity to write more frankly than I feel I could in the community, where there might be young'uns present.

Date: Dec. 9th, 2003 08:07 pm (UTC)Ah, Yami no Matsuei. I've seen part of that, but obviously not enough to encounter him--only the first six episodes, and, oh, do I want to see the rest. For it is gorgeous and of Teh Gay.
For Gren is the most beautiful, complex, melancholy little hermaphrodite in the known universe? Yes, I'm quite fond of him. ;-) (Both my other even vaguely major Bebopfics are at Skyehawke as well--Blue Bird Rhapsody is the Grenfic, and Black Bird Jeopardy is a bizarre little possible origin story for Vicious. If you haven't figured that out already. Finals make for slow posting.)
